The American Heart Association is a special organization to me as heart disease has affected my family, like it has millions of other families. My Uncle passed away suddenly from a heart attack about 5 years ago. Uncle Jimmy (aka Godfather) was a special member of our family and was loved by everyone he met, but most of all by his family. Through this loss, my family and I became inspired to get more involved in the American Heart Association in his memory. We all gathered together each year supporting and celebrating his life and also raising funds for research and medicine of those suffering or could suffer from heart related diseases. In particular, through these events, my family learned more about preventive measures, which could averted what had happened to my uncle; lead to my father became proactive in his heath and through a doctor’s visit found out that he needed immediate bypass surgery. Although he was healthy and active in his everyday life, heart disease could have taken his life. With this screening, he was able to prevent a heart attack from happening. Although, the surgery was a success, the journey to recovery was long and every day going forward is still a fight. Heart disease can impact anyone at any age in so many different ways. As such, the loss of my uncle and the journey of my dad has inspired me to continue my journey with the American Heart Association. I want to continue to spread the knowledge of the Heart American Association to remind those of the preventive measures necessary and build upon the outstanding research that is being done today.
